Hall Place, Dulwich

Hall Place was a country house in west Dulwich, south London, which stood at the northern end of its own 30-acre estate until its demolition in 1880. In its final years it was pretentiously renamed “The Manor House”, but it had never been the manor house of Dulwich — that distinction belonged to Dulwich Court, which stood near what is now the Court Lane entrance to Dulwich Park.

In the late Middle Ages, however, Hall Place had been considered a manor in its own right: the Manor of Knowlis (or Knolles), named for the celebrated soldier Sir Robert Knolles (c.1320–1407).
